Today we arrived to play at the Sand Volleyball courts a little after 5p and there was not a soul there. We had our pick of courts. After playing for maybe an hour, a very nice, polite young lady came up and said that Upward Bound had reserved that specific court. We finished up the last few points of our game and then relinquished the court (though there was no means that she had to prove they had the reservation). Had we known that particular court was reserved, we would've chosen one of the other, vacant courts when we got there at 5.
While there is a billboard on a lightpost near the grill/picnic area, there is neither notice on the courts that they can be reserved nor a schedule indicating what days they are reserved or by whom: for years over the summer it has been first come, first served. A simple laminated sign with a QR code / URL that says "Check here for reservations" would be very much appreciated, as well as indications of known standard reservations (such as upward bound and the upcoming WPGU thursday league).
It should also be noted that there is a sizeable sand volleyball community that plays out on HighCross road at T.K. Wendles/Villiage Inn Pizza that runs a full slate of sand leagues from highly competitive 2's to recreational sixes. But it's out in the middle of nowhere. From the volume of people on the court, there's obviously a big interest in sand volleyball locally and it would be very helpful to those just starting out playing that are interested in moving up in competition level from recreational to be able to see the game being played and have a chance to learn (potentially clinics on how to play). The University should partner up with the sand volleyball community and raise the level of play and exposure to the sport locally.
