I invited Emre for coffee one afternoon before our accounting class and this was an interesting conversation we enjoyed.

Henry: Emre, can you tell me a little about yourself?
Emre: Sure. I came here from Istanbul for my master education with my wife and son. My son is 6 years old and started first grade here and we have a new baby girl on the way. Hopefully, I will return to Turkey with both knowledge and a new baby girl.

Henry: (laugh) Congratulations! When is the due date?
Emre: The second week of December. My plan is to finish my finals before the baby comes.

Henry: Tell me about your business background?
Emre: Upon receiving my degree in the Istanbul University School of Economics, I began working with the Turkish Prime Ministry General Directorate of Foundations as an inspector trainee and have worked there for eight years as an inspector.

Henry: What are the responsibilities of General Directorate of Foundations?
Emre: The General Directorate of Foundations is a governmental organization which is responsible for the regulation and inspection of all foundations and their rights and activities. It is also responsible for protecting general public interests related to foundations and related parties.

Henry: I know you worked in different areas within the Directorate?
Emre: You are right. In September 2008, Istanbul had been selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2010 by the European Parliament, following that, I temporarily moved to another job to work for The Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency. This Agency was in charge of preparing the city of Istanbul for the award. It was amazing opportunity for me to work there. As an Agency, we developed urban projects, organized artistic and cultural activities that focusing on the glamorous cultural heritage and the creative artistic energy of the City. They were in different fields such as Visual Arts, Music and Opera, Performing Arts, Literature, Cinema, Museums and Cultural Heritage, and Traditional Arts. These projects were assessed and financially backed by the Istanbul 2010 ‘ECoC’ Agency and I was in charge providing the financial supports to both projects and The Agency itself.

Henry: I liked this picture. Is it Istanbul?
Emre: It’s a panoramic view of Istanbul’s historical peninsula. In the middle of the picture, you can see The Ottoman Palace, which was built by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453. For several hundred years Ottoman Sultans lived in this Palace. And on the left, you see The Blue Mosque and Hagi Sophia respectively.

Henry: Have you found the MSTM program to be beneficial to you?
Emre: Yes! In fact, I will recommend the MSTM program to all Turkish guys when I return to my country. The program is well designed to meets the challenges in technology for the years to come. I have no doubt that the student population will double by next year.
