NSF Workshop on Security for Cloud Computing
organized by Dr. Klara Nahrstedt and Dr. Roy Campbell
attendance of this workshop is by invitation only

Arlington, Virginia, March 15-16, 2012   FINAL REPORT CAN BE FOUND HERE.

Cloud computing is becoming an integral part of our computing and communication ecosystem offering great opportunity of cost-effective large-scale storage capabilities. As we enter the mass production and ‘cloud services for everybody’, a major question is ‘how secure are the cloud computing services and systems?. Although security has been in for-front of many Information Technology (IT) systems and applications, security and privacy for cloud computing need to become first class features to ensure broad usability and deploy-ability of cloud services.

Workshop Goal: The National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored workshop on Security for Could Computing aims to bring together a small group of academic, industrial and NSF researchers to set research agenda for “Security of Cloud Computing Services and Systems’, and discuss the next set of problems towards formulating next NSF CISE calls for proposals for a broader computer science and engineering research community in this area. This research area is of great importance to NSF CISE and it has major backing from the Assistant Director of NSF CISE, Dr. Farnam Jahanian, Division Director of Computer and Network Systems Division, Dr. Keith Marzullo, Program Director for Computer Systems Research Program, Dr. Mohamed Gouda, and Program Director of Trustworthy Computing Program, Dr. Samuel Weber.

Workshop Organization: The NSF workshop organizers, Dr. Klara Nahrstedt and Dr. Roy Campbell from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will work with the workshop attendees to discuss and formulate the research agenda. The workshop will be organized in five discussion sessions over the 1 ½ day workshop (March 15-16, 2012) and the aimed discussion sessions and their topics will be:

    • Session 1: Adversary models for cloud computing
    • Session 2: Delegation and Authorization  in Cloud Computing
    • Session 3: End-to-End Security in Cloud Computing
    • Session 4: New Problems in Security for Cloud Computing

Each session will be attended by all participants of the NSF workshop, and each session will have a moderator, scribe, and three panelists of the session to start the discussion as well as record the discussion in the specific session topic. The deliverable of the workshop will be a final report which will include the summary of the sessions’ discussions, representing the research agenda for the community with a set of problems that need to be addressed and funded.

We are looking forward to your participation and interesting discussion on security for cloud computing.

Keynote Speaker - Leendert van Doorn-

    Title: Securing the Cloud

In this talk I will look at Cloud security from a systems perspective and in particular from a semiconductor manufacturer. I’ll take a critical look at the current and future system trends (both hardware and software) and I’ll focus on what works well and what doesn’t work well in a world where scale and cost are the overriding engineering principles.

Dr. Leendert van Doorn is a Corporate Vice President /Corporate Fellow at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). There he is responsible for software strategy and in particular he has the corporate technology responsibility for virtualization, security, manageability, and operating systems. He is a member of AMD’s corporate technology advisor board and he is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon and Rice University. Before joining AMD he was a Sr. Manager at IBM’s T.J. Watson’s Research Center where he worked on secure hypervisors, trusted computing, and secure coprocessors.
