TEDxUIUC Curator Cristian Mitreanu
TED is a nonprofit organization that devotes itself to spreading ideas. Started in 1984, TED was origianlly a small conference that brought together people from the worlds of Technology, Entertainment and Design. Since then it has grown into much larger conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK. The TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs all belong to the TED organization, and that's where UIUC comes in.
TEDxUIUC is a local, student organized event and branded TEDx because x = independently organized event. Overseen by Cristian and other MBA students - Srinivas Venugapal (MBA2; Co-Curator), Matt Lesh (MBA2; Operations Manager), Charu Noheria (MBA1, Customer Relations Manager), Derek Larsen (MBA/MArch; Graphic Designer) - the event was held on Saturday, February 19th and brought quite an audience. Some of the speakers featured at the event were:
> Tiffany White; Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Illinois
> Don Wuebbles; 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Winner for his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences & the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois
> Mark SubbaRao; Astronomer & Director of the Space Visualization Laboratory at the Adler Planetarium
> Daniel Simons; Professor in the Department of Psychology & Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois
>Sherry Turkle; Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology Director, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
When asked about TEDxUIUC, curator Cristian Mitreanu said, "Our second annual edition of TEDxUIUC was definitely a success. Aside from the visible progress in setup and organization, this year we were able to come much closer to my original vision for this initiative. It's really a threefold vision: to provide a platform for some of the world's top thinkers and doers to influence the world for the better, to bring together a group of individuals, who are passionate about learning and exchanging ideas, and to provide a marketing vehicle for some of the greatest ideas and innovations developed at UIUC."
Not only was the event successful, the support from students throughout the university was tremendous. Most of the student volunteers present at the event were MBA students, and all had very positive experiences to reflect on. Volunteer and first-year MBA Jill Krivacek said, "TEDx was a great opportunity to hear some of the greatest research results in science, engineering, and business. The event was extremely well-run. TEDx offered a perfect combination of learning and networking opportunities".
Natalie Keable, another student volunteer said, "TEDxUIUC provided us with great exposure to a diverse group of professionals who are experts in their field. It's amazing to hear them speak because you don't get this range of experience within the course plan of any one specific major. Very interesting and I was happy to be a part of the event."
Additionally, Operations Manager Matt Lesh thought the "2011 TEDxUIUC event provided a great avenue for business professionals, academics, and students to come together and discuss topics related technology, entertainment, and design. But, it goes without saying that this would would not have been possible without all the help from the IMBA student volunteers who truly made this event a success."
