    Prairie Research Institute Marketing Internship for the Naturally Illinois Expo The Prairie Research Institute seeks a Marketing Intern for the spring semester for our premier community outreach event, the 2013 Naturally Illinois Expo. The Expo is March 8-9 (same weekend as Engineering Open House and ExplorACES) on campus at the Natural Resources Building, 6th and Peabody Drive.

    The Expo features Institute scientists with exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for all ages. The event attracts 3,000 attendees; half are local elementary and middle school students. Details are at An Institute employee volunteer committee and about 250 volunteers organize and stage the Expo.

    The Marketing Intern will help with: Communications planning; news media relations and publicity calls, releases and alerts, distribution, lists; advertising and underwriting rates and schedules, content; community calendars draft entries, submit webpage content; social media plan and activity; collaboration with ExplorACES and EOH for joint promotion; strategies for increasing U of I student attendance at Expo Institute display and handouts.

    Hours are flexible and some work can be done off-site. But the intern must be available to work extra hours during Expo week, March 4-9, including Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9. The position reports to the Institute Communications Director and will work with other Institute staff and Expo Committee members.

    The internship does not offer monetary compensation but has the potential to become a paid internship for future Institute marketing or communications activities including the 2014 Expo.

    Qualifications: excellent writing and general communication skills; excellent coordinating and organizing skills; ability to think and work independently, as well as with a partner or within a committee; available to work a minimum of 6-8 hours per week; commitment to be available to work extra hours during Expo week, March 4-9, including most of Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9 If possible, attend committee meetings (2 hrs.) every other week beginning in January; meet with director weekly or as needed (1 hour max) during business hours; provide own laptop; workspace available at times but much of work can be done off-site Proficient with Microsoft Office and social media.

    Preferred Qualifications: event planning or promotion experience; marketing, advertising, media relations, or journalism experience; course-work or strong interest in science (biology, archaeology, geology, environmental sciences, sustainable technology)
