| Postdoctoral Research Colloquium: In this talk I discuss the pathologization of indigenous Mexican migrant culture in the United States by social service providers, legal experts and other "public" servants. As indigenous migration increases, so do the cases in which their cultural practices and behaviors are defined as harmful to their health, that of their families, and society at large. Responses to this alarming trend from within the community are rooted in the recuperation of indigenous identity. Does this response reinforce or undo the discourses that perceive indigenous culture as harmful? |
