ABSTRACT:
The evolution of computer software systems has resulted in rich interfaces, astounding performance, and dismal security and privacy protection. Most people blame this situation on the apparent lack of interest from customers. Yet the real cause is that the industry has only focused upon the purely technological aspects of the problem. Systems that provide real security and privacy protection will continue to elude us as long as the builders of those systems continue to ignore one simple, but inconvenient, fact: people will be using them. In this talk, Dr. Palmer will discuss the unique challenges posed by users of security and privacy and will explore some paths towards building safer software systems.

BIOGRAPHY:
Charles C. Palmer is the CTO for Security and Privacy for IBM Research, and Associate Director of Computer Science at Watson. He is currently the Director of Research and Chair of the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P), which is managed by Dartmouth College. Founded in 2002, the I3P is a national consortium of 28 universities, nonprofits, and national labs that is focused on doing funded research for the US Government in the area of cyber-security.
Palmer is a member of the US Department of Homeland Security's Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Board, where he chairs the emerging technology and applications subcommittee. He is also a member of DHS's Cross Sector Cyber Security Working Group. He is a member of the editorial boards for the IEEE Computer Society's Security & Privacy Magazine and the International Journal of Information and Computer Security. He was also an adjunct professor of computer science at Polytechnic University from 1993 to 1997. He was named a Distinguished Engineer of the ACM in 2006, and is also a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Polytechnic University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Tulane University, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Oklahoma State University.
