ABSTRACT:

Pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) applications are becoming part of our daily lives as an increasing number of car insurance companies are offering PAYD programmes to their customers, and recently governments have started to consider PAYD as the future for tax collection. In the European Union, Road Tolling, in which citizens pay taxes depending on the use they make of roads, will become a reality within five years, as required by the European Commission decision on European Electronic Toll Service.

In this talk, we will describe PAYD services and consider their privacy implications and the legal issues that arise from their deployment in the framework of the European Data Protection Directive. Finally, we will discuss possible privacy-friendly implementations for PAYD, and their pros and cons.
