| Central to the advancement of our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of quantum computers is the quest to devise ever better ways to poke and prod atoms and photons in our laboratories. We have developed techniques to manipulate atoms using a chip reminiscent of a computer circuit board. These atom chips have found great application in strongly coupling single atoms to photons, in investigating Bose-Einstein condensates, and in creating an atom mirror from an ordinary computer hard drive. |
