The Central African kingdom of Kongo converted to Catholicism in the late fourteen hundreds as it became an active participant in the early modern Atlantic world. A watercolor painted around 1740 by an Italian missionary depicting Kongo ritual martial exercises showcased how symbols of prestige borrowed from Portugal, and Christianity as a whole, entered into dialogue with Central African expressions of might and legitimacy, and their concomitant mythological and religious base. In the ceremony, the Kongo elite expressed with its regalia how its status no longer proceeded from a local narrative but rather derived from a symbolic system that also encompassed cosmopolitan cultural referents. The insignia formed a hybrid cultural discourse that demonstrated the Central African's ability to embrace novelty and contend with otherness in a self-centered process of cross-cultural reinvention.

Yue Minjun, a lifelong resident of Beijing, has emerged as one of the preeminent artists of the Cynical Realism movement in contemporary Chinese painting. His works are instantly recognizable by the characteristic laughing man, each a self-portrait of Yue Minjun, depicted in a variety of guises and in virtually all of his works. Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjuns paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical inquiry and contemplation of existence.
