The Ambassador of Ireland to the United States will kick off the 12th Annual European Union Day with the “State of the European Union” address, Friday, February 15, at 10 am in the University of Illinois’ Alice Campbell Alumni Center Ballroom.
His Excellency Michael Collins will provide his perspective on the present and future direction of the 27-member European Union during EU Day’s keynote address, offering insight on timely topics such as the ongoing euro crisis and EU-U.S. relations. Ireland currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Before assuming his current role, Collins served as second secretary general in the government department of the prime minister of Ireland, with responsibility for international and European Union affairs and particularly the Northern Ireland Peace Process. Prior to that, he was appointed Ireland’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
This event is followed by a "Visions for a Future Europe" panel discussion with members of the Chicago Consular Corps at 2:00 PM.
This event is free and open to the public.
