Abstract: The University of Illinois is a leader in global engagement and has numerous resources to encourage international partnerships. Identifying areas of common interest can serve as the basis for expanding international collaboration in water-related research, education, and outreach. From a global perspective, protecting water resources often requires a multidisciplinary effort, and our campus is well suited for this approach. The University of Leeds has developed a successful model for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Water@Leeds is the largest university-based water research center in the UK and has an excellent record of developing strategic partnerships.

Bio: George Czapar is the Director for the Center for Watershed Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Czapar has been active in the off-campus graduate studies program in the department of crop sciences. In 2007 he was invited to join the ACES Academy for Global Engagement, a yearlong program that includes a series of scholarly and experiential activities designed to prepare participants for international engagement. As a result of this experience, he successfully received external funding to develop collaborative partnerships with Zhejiang University in China and the University of Leeds in England.
