Keynote lecture for the "Symposium on European Union Governance: Legislative Politics, Foreign Policy and Networking." The lecture introduces and contrasts recent work by Nils Ringe and colleagues on social networks in the European Parliament. It discusses various approaches to measuring network ties, methods for analyzing them, and the challenges and payoffs associated with using social network analysis. Substantively, the research highlights the importance of social networks for the exchange of political and policy information, for positive and negative cueing, and for legislators exerting influence on one another. It demonstrates the utility of recognizing and examining the relational properties of legislative politics.
