"Staying out of jail: Why you need to know about responsible conduct of research" - Responsible conduct of research and ethics are becoming of paramount importance in all aspects of professional development. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign requires strict adherence by faculty, staff and students to accepted academic integrity standards and practices. The essence of ethical guidelines far surpasses rules and regulations ' it is the emergence of personal values in determining how we perform our research, work with collaborators, and present our results. The alternative is damage to the entire research enterprise and betrays basic public trust. This presentation will review basic concepts fundamental to responsible conduct and promote an awareness to best practices by the researcher.
