LAS 490 Translation Study Abroad
Translation in the EU
Locations: Paris, Strasbourg, Brussels
Dates: May 13-27
Cost: $2500 (estimated)
The purpose of this two week intensive study abroad course is to expose students to the dynamics of the geo-political environment of the European Union and provide hands-on experience with the translator's role and responsibility as mediator and communicator in today's European multi-lingual and multicultural societies. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in any major. The course is of particular interest to students in foreign languages, cultures, and linguistics, political science, international studies, European Union Studies, global studies, law and business. The program consists of behind the scenes visits to international agencies and cultural sites relevant to language and culture studies. Cities visited will include Paris, Strasbourg, and Brussels. The experience can lead to internships in international agencies. Agencies included on the itinerary: UNESCO, NATO, European Parliament, European Commission, Directorate General of Translation of the EC.
