Environmental considerations and sustainability are issues that are gaining more and more importance as time goes by. Cutting oils made of mineral oils, which constitute bulk of the cutting oil market, are, mostly, environmentally hazardous. They also pose significant health hazards. In the quest to make a product sustainable two aspects are of prime importance; 1) The rate at which resources are used, if they are replenished by nature, should not be faster than the replenishment rate and 2) The products has to be recycled, if they are not replenished. Cutting oils made of mineral oils and, possibly, synthetic oils do not meet either of these requirements. In order to make a cutting oil meet these conditions it is essential that the constituents used meet all the criteria mentioned above. It is with these basic principles that we set about creating cutting oil that is completely sustainable. The talk will cover the various aspects of sustainability and on the development of environmentally friendly cutting oils.
This seminar will be broadcast live on the ISTC website www.istc.illinois.edu and also archived there for later viewing.
