Costa Rica is a developing country in Central America. It has relatively high income and high education rate for Central America. The country prides itself on its environmental efforts to preserve the tropical rainforest and biodiversity. Yet, it still has many problems stemming from water supply and natural hazards. Agricultural and urban contaminants are found in surface water. There are indications that ground water is increasingly contaminated. Sewage in urban areas is not generally treated before it flows into the surface water system. The Costa Rican communities suffer repeatedly from natural hazards. Some of the damage might be prevented with engineering and foresight. There may be multiple barriers impeding community sustainability.
