Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) Seminars

Chicago-based artist Lauren Levato Coyne takes her inspiration not only from the natural world, but also from the human endeavor to understand it. With a passionate interest in the natural sciences, Levato Coyne uses living and preserved specimens, museum and personal collections, field-based study and historical research, to craft drawings that range from topical anatomical studies to fully rendered drawings from which she creates imagined portraits. Levato Coyne’s work is a unique blend of art and science that examines the inquisitive and imaginative impetus that drives both of these inextricably linked disciplines. During this seminar, Levato Coyne will discuss this impetus and the common questions that underpin both the artistic and scientific study of the natural world.
