Collaborating To Go Beyond Disease Outbreaks to Assess Wellness of Wildlife

Disease events are becoming commonplace in more and more wildlife populations. Within the last 4 four years, several disease events have occurred within endangered and common reptiles in Illinois alone. These disease events can have profound impact on population sustainability. The presentation will describe these events and how they lead to assessments on overall population health that can influence management decisions.  The current study describes the largest health assessment and disease investigation that characterizes physiological variation due to differences in location, sex, age class, and time of year.  Furthermore, geospatial analysis has identified trends in the health of this species that demonstrate land use changes influence basic wellness parameters.  In total, data will be presented that builds the database and usefulness of health monitoring of this species as an ecosystem service.
