ABSTRACT:

We rely upon errors that are inevitable during the manufacturing of optical media to create distinct, hard-to-forge certificates of authenticity. Surprisingly, the copyright owner's only responsibility is to protect a private key. The adversary cannot compromise the security of Optical DNA even when granted access to all of its technical details and physical artifacts including the glass masters, and provided with manufacturing machinery of substantially higher quality than the plant printing genuine discs. Armed with this weapon, we aim at protecting about $100B worth of content delivered via optical media annually. The speaker will also discuss trends that are to define the usage case for online vs. optical media delivery.

BIOGRAPHY:

Since joining Microsoft Research in 2000, Darko Kirovski has split time between the Crypto and Machine Learning groups there, flirting with the freedom that the lab offers to its researchers to work on a wide variety of systems projects that span authentication, anti-counterfeiting, mobile payments, and Kinect games, among others. He has published over 100 research articles and co-invented over 100 filed patents; all that thanks to a 2001 Ph.D. in CS from UCLA. His hobby is statistical arbitrage.
