Roger Shimomura is an internationally celebrated artist and University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. Shimomura uses painting, printmaking, and experimental theatre to address sociopolitical issues of ethnicity. His stylistic representations reflect the aesthetic conventions of comic books, cartoons, and Pop Art. Working in these Western traditions, Shimomura exposes and battles both past and prevailing stereotypes and misconceptions he encounters as a third generation Asian American. An artist lecture will be held at the Visual Arts Gallery on Oct. 11, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, followed by a reception from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
