Rob Minkoff’s feature film Forbidden Kingdom (2008) provides an example for viewers to examine cultural transformation and transnational Asian/Asian American identities in action cinema. Featuring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li, the film re-imagines the traditional tale of the Monkey King with a transnational Asian/Asian American spin, and presents a powerful narrative about identity politics, cultural transformation and adolescent self-realization. Through its multinational production and casting, this film incorporates convention, characters and other elements of the Hong Kong action cinema and shows the film genre’s global impact
