Abstract

This presentation focuses on the efforts underway to help advance state-of-the-art induction motor (IM) and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) technology to reduce machine size and weight. High-frequency, high-pole-count designs are being explored to reduce/eliminate the use of ferromagnetic iron in the magnetic circuit, and to address associated electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical issues. We discuss the scope of our detailed analysis using analytical and numerical models to capture the multi-physics trade-offs that arise. The opportunity for increased power density using the high-frequency, high- pole design has been demonstrated for PMSMs, and effects of similar approaches to IMs are also under investigation. Funding of these efforts comes from the Grainger Foundation and NASA.
