"Power Quality Compensation in Distribution Systems Using Active Power Filters"

Srikanthan Sridharan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

This talk will address some of the power quality challenges in the distribution system, compounded by the extensive use of power electronic equipment and unbalanced and nonlinear loads. Such equipment and loads cause excessive neutral currents, over-heating of electrical apparatus, high neutral to ground voltages in three-wire systems and result in poor power factor. We discuss mitigation devices such as shunt active power filters (SHAPFs) or distribution static compensators (DSTATCOMs). Passive filters have been traditionally used to mitigate some of the above problems despite their limitations of size, unwanted resonances and coordination issues. Hence, the deployment of active power filters is of interest. SHAPF, realized as a voltage source inverter (VSI), injects currents at the point of common coupling (PCC) to meet the objectives of load balancing, harmonic elimination and power factor improvement. The talk will present various control algorithms, inverter topologies and considerations and also discuss simulation and experimental results.
