The American Psychological Foundation (APF) and the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP) award 13 annual scholarships for graduate research. The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduate students of psychology with research costs.
SUPPORT PROVIDED: The top applicant will receive the $5,000 Harry and Miriam Levinson Scholarship, the second-place applicant, the $3,000 Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship; and the third-place applicant the $2,000 Clarence J. Rosecrans Scholarship. Ten other finalists will receive $1,000 each, including the $1,000 APF Peter and Malina James & Dr. Louis P. James Legacy Scholarship. In 2012, APF will also be offering a $3,000 scholarship for a talented woman to help launch her career in the profession of psychology. This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of the Friedman-Klarreich Family Foundation. In conjunction with the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology, APF awards nine additional $1,000 scholarships.
APPLICANT INFORMATION: Graduate students enrolled in an interim master's program or doctoral program are eligible to apply. If a student is currently enrolled in a terminal master's program, the student must intend to enroll in a PhD program. Special attention will be given to applications from students who, at the time of application, are within the first two years of graduate study in psychology. The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduate students of psychology with research costs associated with the master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. NOTE: Nominees must be currently enrolled in the graduate program at the time grants are awarded.
APPLICATION INFORMATION: Application details and the application form are available at the above e-forms address. All application materials must be received by the Science Directorate in one complete package on or before June 30, 2012. Direct questions to: 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242, telephone: (202)336-6000, or e-mail: science@apa.org.
LIMITED SUBMISSION: Each graduate department of psychology that is a member of COGDOP may submit nominations. The number of candidates that each member department is allowed to nominate depends upon the total number of students enrolled in the graduate program. Departments that have 100 or fewer students enrolled in their graduate programs may nominate one candidate; departments that have 101-200 graduate students enrolled may nominate up to two candidates; and departments that have more than 200 graduate students enrolled may nominate up to three candidates. The Foundation encourages nominations of students who are enrolled in interim master's programs. Nominees must be currently enrolled in the graduate program at the time grants are awarded. NOTE: The June 22, 2012, deadline is the internal UIUC deadline necessary to meet the APF's national deadline. All (and only) UIUC candidates must go through Dr. Susan Garnsey, Associate Professor and Associate Head for Graduate Affairs, above.
