Japanese Internationalization of Education: Disarming the World by Shifting Cultural Convergence

Japan has used education as a mechanism of modernization and internationalization for well over a century. Educating Japanese citizens for global competence and “mutual understanding” has figured prominently in education policy for the last two decades, yet Japanese notions of internationalization have specific utilitarian objectives tied to a domestic agenda. in particular advance the rhetoric of cultural awareness and promotion of cosmopolitan perspectives, but often bely language education and international exchange policies which both recognize globalization in the world as a western cultural norm, and seek to shift the convergence of culture to a decidedly Asian, even Japanese paradigm.

Global Competence: Moving Beyond Stereotypes and Other Cultural Barriers

Don’t believe everything you “know” about a particular region or culture. The popular media, including foreign news outlets, often present a skewed, one-sided story. Becoming mindful of our own cultural perspectives and bias is the most important step toward achieving cross-cultural fluency. We will explore issues of representation, common ways in which we “other” certain people/places, and discuss strategies for improving and facilitating cross-cultural interactions.

Through discussions and activities we will examine intertwining identities in the Middle East: Arab, ethnic minorities, different Islamic identities, other religious identities, history, national identities, demographics, etc.

Saving Timbuktu Documents: An Act of Global Citizenship
Maimouna Barro, Associate Director, Center for African Studies, University of Illinois
Largely unknown outside the world of Africanists, the Timbuktu manuscripts have recently received considerable attention in the current context of crisis and growing insecurity in Mali and the Sahel region. This presentation focuses on the intellectual history of Mali and Timbuktu and its significance in African history and shows the extent to which efforts to preserve Timbuktu's intellectual heritage constitute an act of global citizenship, not just now, but throughout the centuries.

Project-Based Learning for Global Citizenship

In this full-day workshop session, teachers will be exposed to a foundational toolbox of pedagogies, methodologies, and resources for developing transformative global experiences that humanize global issues and engage students in creating change. With ample opportunity for dialogue and hands-on work, the workshop will explore the facets of global citizenship, project-based learning approaches to global learning, and the development of 21st Century skills through global collaborations.

Summary of current models of global citizenship education, drawing especially on research and curriculum-based projects undertaken by graduate students in the Global Studies in Education Masters degree program of the College of Education. Two teachers will present their projects in greater detail: Teaching Globalization in Social Science Class: A Case Study of India, by Amisha Shah, and Conceptualizing Poverty in the Educational Setting: A Student Response to Local and Global Poverty, by Tracy Kitzman.
