ABSTRACT:

The explosion in system and application complexity, together with the rapid growth in the breadth, diversity, and societal impact of software, has resulted in ever-expanding failure sources. 

As systems have become more complex and the software executing on these systems has become more diverse and ubiquitous, their reliability and resilience have assumed increasing importance in multiple facets of daily life. 

In comparison, hardware failures, although important, remain at manageable levels.  

It is not uncommon for software to contribute to substantial outages in systems, ranging from large clouds to small embedded devices. 

This talk will outline major challenges and opportunities in the design and validation of software systems, exemplifying the major issues and directions of research.

Specifically, we will address key application domains of the future, from i) High-Performance Computing and ii) Cloud Computing Systems to iii) Small Embedded Devices, and their roles in personalized medicine, driven by automatic patient monitoring and analysis.  

BIOGRAPHY:  

Professor Iyer is the George and Ann Fisher Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds joint appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL), and the Department of Computer Science, and serves as Chief Scientist of the Information Trust Institute. Iyer has led several large successful projects funded by NASA, DARPA, NSF, and private industry. He currently co-leads the CompGen Center at Illinois. Funded by NSF and partnering with industry leaders, hospitals, and research labs, CompGen aims to build a new computational platform to address both accuracy and performance issues for a range of genomics applications. Professor Iyer is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the IEEE, and the ACM. He has received several awards, including the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Information Systems Award, the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award, and the 2011 Outstanding Contributions award from the Association of Computing Machinery - Special Interest Group on Security for his fundamental and far-reaching contributions in secure and dependable computing. Professor Iyer is also the recipient of a degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from Toulouse Sabatier University in France.
