Non-Latin Scripts in a Romanized World
Goals
In the summer of 2012, the SRL will include a workshop for librarians who do not have linguistic expertise in the region but who work with scholars who need vernacular language materials. This is a common problem faced by those working in document delivery in libraries today, made more challenging by the decreasing number of area specialists available in libraries.
The sessions will discuss the strategies and pitfalls of searching library catalogs, searching beyond the U.S., the variety of transliteration systems in used needed for searching older materials which use archaic spelling, identifying and searching the databases of the region, using non-Latin alphabets and various transcription formats. special topics will include censorship as a factor in locating and verifying material.
