This study analyzes the experiences of 23 high-achieving African American mathematics and engineering college students. Results reveal two main motivations for, and trajectories of, resilience:

  1. Succeeding to prove racial stereotypes wrong (a fragile mathematics identity), and
  2. Succeeding to serve as role models for African American learners (a robust mathematics identity).

Movement within and across mathematics identities is operationalized through a conceptual framework, entitled stereotype management. The speaker will be Ebony McGee from Northwestern University.
