NRES Departmental Seminar by Eric Hellgren, wildlife ecologist in the
Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory and Professor in the
Department of Zoology, Southern Illinois University.

Title: Ecology of the Texas Horned Lizard: 10 Years on an Urban Habitat Island

Long-term research on the ecology of wildlife species is valuable for understanding factors affecting population dynamics and responses to habitat change. However, long-term research is fraught with a variety of challenges. In this talk, I will discuss some challenges and opportunities encountered while studying the Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) on an Air Force base in central Oklahoma for 10 years, as well as describe some of our more interesting findings.

Eric Hellgren received his Ph.D. in 1988 from Virginia Tech University. He held research and academic appointments at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and at Oklahoma State University before moving to his current position in fall 2005 as Director of the Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory and Professor of Zoology at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He primarily studies mammalian ecology and has dabbled in reptilian ecology. Dr. Hellgren has published >130 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in Ecology, Ecological Applications, Conservation Biology, Oecologia, Oikos, Biological Conservation, Physiological and Biochemical Zoology, Journal of Wildlife Management, and Journal of Mammalogy; and 6 book chapters. He has served as an Associate Editor of several serial publications and is currently Editor of Wildlife Monographs.
