NRES Departmental Seminar by Dr. Cindy Longmire, Human Dimensions Specialist with South Dakota Game Fish and Parks' Division of Wildlife

 North Dakota Wildlife at sunset

Title: Serving People, Managing Wildlife: The Role of Human Dimensions in
a State Agency

Hunting, fishing, trapping, and other wildlife-related activities are vital parts of South Dakota's heritage, economy, and quality of life. Studies of the importance of wildlife and aquatic resources have shown South Dakota residents place a high value on having healthy wildlife and fish populations, and for the large majority, these resources contribute to residents' high quality of life. Over time, the complexity of managing wildlife and aquatic resources has increased as the number and diversity of uses and users has increased. Different publics have their own philosophy and methodology for managing these resources, which may conflict with other groups' interests, as well as management objectives. Increased interest in public participation has created both opportunities and challenges for involving stakeholders constructively in the management of these public resources. The South Dakota Game, Fish, and, Parks' Division of Wildlife has implemented a range of strategies to facilitate constructive public involvement in managing the state's wildlife and aquatic resources. This presentation examines one avenue where this participation may occur by following the path from conception to implementation for three recent wildlife management topics in South Dakota, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities along the way.
