With over 300 million tons of polymers produced annually, plastics represent a significant portion of today’s chemical industry. Recent discoveries involving transition metal catalysts have opened new possibilities in terms of material properties as well as the environmental footprint of manufacturing processes. The first part of my talk will relate to the discovery of a new palladium catalyst that resulted in the first example of an acrylate polymerization by an insertion mechanism. The second part of my talk will be about the first selective synthesis of p-xylene, a key precursor in the production of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), from ethylene using multiple catalytic reactions in cascade.
