Islamic art’s engagement with figural images is guided by religious precepts that prevent idolatry, which has resulted in a cultural preference for ornament and text as forms of visual expression. My paper will look at how human presence is represented in Islamic art, both through portraits and representations of fictional scenes with figures (which did exist in Islamic art) and through the signature and material trace of the artist him/herself. I will look at a range of instances in which identity is displayed, from the naming of patrons, architects, and ordinary masons in inscriptions in the Great Mosque of Cordoba, to the traces left on the material environment by anonymous laborers.
