What is true sustainability? How do we measure it and what steps need to be taken to get there? If true sustainability cannot be achieved how do we best prepare for the coming ecological decline?
Come hear from Erik Assadourian about how leading thinkers are answering these questions. Erik is editor of the Worldwatch Institute's "State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?" - a compilation of writings on preparing our culture and economy for potentially turbulent times. The evening will consist of a talk by Erik and a chance to discuss these issues with fellow students, faculty, and community members.
There will be a book signing and reception following the presentation. Then from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, come learn to play the climate change version of the popular board game "The Settlers of Catan"! "Catan: Oil Springs" is a scenario written by Erik Assadourian and Ty Hansen. It was developed by the Transforming Cultures Project of the Worldwatch Institute for the purpose of creating awareness about the effects of the usage of oil on the environment. Erik will bring several sets of the game for multiple players.
Both activities are free and open to U of IL faculty, staff, and students as well as the general public. Please register at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/5486943.
This event is co-sponsored by the IL Sustainable Technology Center (a division of the Prairie Research Institute) and the Center for a Sustainable Environment at U of IL.
