Despite steady improvements in the capabilities of database optimizers, SQL performance remains an issue for most IT shops. Identifying poorly performing SQL and determining its current execution plan is a fairly straightforward process. Determining an optimal execution plan for a given SQL statement and convincing the database to follow that plan remains an issue. This presentation introduces the concept of Query Diagramming, a vendor-neutral technique that provides a framework for determining optimal execution plans. Query Diagramming is discussed in detail in the book SQL Tuning, by Dan Tow.
