Land use and Land cover Change and its impact on Hydrological Processes

Land-use and Land-cover Change (LULCC) is a locally pervasive and globally significant ecological trend. Three of the most documented global change phenomenon’s are: increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; alterations in the biochemistry of the global nitrogen cycle; and on-going land-use/land-cover change. LULCC is also linked to the most significant environmental implications viz., alterations of hydrological process and biodiversity loss at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Indian economy is primarily based on agriculture. The growing population and demand on land has grown many fold during last five decades. Land degradation of various forms has further complicated the LULCC process in most agriculturally productive landscapes. Under ISRO-Geosphere Biosphere Program (ISRO-GBP) major initiative has produced spatial data sets on LULCC of all 14 river basins has assessed using satellite remote sensing data sets (of three seasons) of 1985, 1995 & 2005. The data sets have been used to model the future changes based on the past trends and the drivers thought to determine conversions of land between different categories. Integrated land change science is used for spatially explicit, dynamic land change models that explain and project LULCC.

 

The presentation includes hydrological modeling to quantify the impact of LULCC on the hydrological regimes in the river basins of India. Variable Infiltration capacity (VIC) model which is a semi-distributed macro-scale hydrological model designed to represent surface energy and hydrological fluxes at varying scales. VIC captures the LULCC on hydrological processes. The results obtained in two river basins will be presented.

Dr P S Roy is Geospatial Chair Professor at Center for Earth and Space Science of Hyderabad Central University. He has been active scientist and researcher in the area of Earth Observation Science years with Indian Space Research Organization in various positions. He is Fellow of National Academy of sciences India, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Indian Society of Remote Sensing, National Academy of Forestry and Environmental Sciences and Indian Geophysical Union. He has >150 research papers in the international peer reviewed journals.
