SDEP Critical Climate Studies Seminar: Open Discussion Forum
The SDEP “Critical Climate Studies” brings together University of Illinois scholars from across the social sciences and humanities that work on the social, cultural, and political-ecological dimensions of climate change and its myriad related implications. The seminar creates a space in which scholars with a critical social science angle on the environment can exchange ideas on empirically grounded and conceptually rigorous research and writing. The seminar provides a venue to explore key crosscutting themes and frameworks, and to discuss common methodological and theoretical challenges. Some topics that have so far been discussed are:
- The politics of climate skepticism in North America
- Urban flood vulnerability and local politics in Argentina
- Accountability and representation in forest governance in Africa
- Democracy, livelihoods, and rural development in India
- Water governance and citizen-state relations in urban India
Participation: The Critical Climate Studies Seminar is designed for faculty, Post-docs and graduate students actively engaged in research on the critical climate studies frontier. There are no presentations made in this seminar – it is not a speaker series. At each meeting we discuss works of or proposed by participants in the seminar.
