Case-based instruction, an inductive teaching method increasingly used in many disciplines, exposes students to scenarios (historical or hypothetical) that involve problem-solving or decision-making encountered in the context of professional practice. Engaging students in the analysis of cases that include specific, complex real-world problems can foster their motivation to seek out knowledge and build professional skills which can help them become better informed and adept at solving problems.

Compared to more traditional, deductive teaching methods, case-based instruction can enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills, awareness of ethical dilemmas, and abilities to identify relevant issues, draw generalizations, and recognize the value of multiple perspectives.

This workshop will focus on the use of case-based teaching in service-learning and international service-learning courses. Participants will learn about the theory and method of case-based teaching, strategies for combining cases with other active learning techniques, and tips for designing a case that meets service-learning course objectives. This interactive session will provide opportunities for participants to gain practice working with service-learning cases and to engage in activities that will jump-start their own writing of an (international) service-learning teaching case.
