This year’s workshop is intended to explore models of mentoring that don’t rely on simply replicating one’s own choices, assumptions, and career paths. Faculty mentors and graduate students often differ in significant, sometimes unacknowledged, ways. These differences might include, for instance, disciplinary background; language and culture; potential career trajectories; identity (such as race, ethnicity, gender, ability, or sexual orientation); economic background; as well as other differences. A panel of experienced faculty mentors will discuss how they negotiate differences within successful mentoring relationships. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss when and how differences matter in their mentoring practices; strategies for productively navigating differences (and similarities) in mentoring relationships; and whether and how alternative mentoring structures might be useful for faculty and graduate students.
