Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has arrived in Illinois, and gas lease speculation has begun. Unfortunately, IL like many states is ill-equipped to deal with this new industry, and there are virtually no safeguards to protect drinking water and or public health.
Fracking is a process in which water, sand and chemicals are injected into a well at high pressure to create small cracks in shale rock. The fissures in the rock allow natural gas to freely flow to the surface. Toxic chemicals are used at every stage of the fracking process, which raises concerns about impacts to local water supplies, chemical disclosure and what to do with the wastewater.
Join Sierra Club as we team up with Naperville for Clean Energy and Conservation for a program on fracking in Illinois.
