In spring 2012, students enrolled in ART 191/RHET 233 ' 'The Ethnography of Allen Hall: A Documentary Project in Word and Image,' produced both a short multimedia presentation and a series of photographs documenting student members of 'Q,' Allen Hall's LGBTQIA student organization. An ongoing project guided by UIUC faculty members Carol Spindel and Brad Hudson, the Ethnography of Allen Hall seeks to investigate and understand the culture of student life in Allen Hall through interviews, photography, and the ethnographic technique of participant observation.
This exhibit, curated by undergraduate students Dominique Moore and Harrison Hakes, is based on several of the photographs from 'Q,' and documents the history of UIUC's LGBT Center and LGBT issues on this campus. Sponsored by the Ethnography of the University Initiative, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center, and the Social Sciences, Health and Education Library, the exhibit will run from December 1, 2012, through January 31, 2012, in the Main Library's Marshall Gallery.
