I will describe the new Information Initiative at Duke (iiD) which developed from the recognition that access to unprecedented amounts of information is creating new opportunities for mathematical scientists, working in multidisciplinary teams, to actively engage with and to change the world around them. It is taking shape on the third floor of newly renovated Gross Hall where a nucleus of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from different disciplines are sharing space. We are already exploring collaboration with the Social Sciences Research Institute (SSRI), which is relocating to the second floor of Gross Hall. I will also describe a complementary university-wide educational initiative called Bass Connections which will provide students with greater exposure to inquiry across the disciplines, partnership with unlikely fellow thinkers, sustained mentorship in teams, and the chance to experience the intersections of the academy and the broader world.
