BIG Seminar: Soft Tissue Biomechanics of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers are among the most significant complications in people with diabetes mellitus. Although the etiology of diabetic foot ulcers remains much unknown, it is widely accepted that repetitive high plantar pressure during walking may initiate the foot ulcer development. In this presentation, I will review ongoing studies in my lab to explore the mechanical etiology of diabetic foot ulcers. I will introduce ultrasound indentation tests used to quantify effective Young’s modulus and quasi-linear viscoelastic property of the diabetic foot. The effect of the changes of plantar soft tissue mechanical properties on skin blood flow response to mechanical stress will be discussed. Wavelet-based analysis of blood flow oscillations will also be reviewed.  

 About the Speaker

Yih-Kuen Jan, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Community Health and Director of Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his MS degree in Biomedical Engineering from the National Yang Ming University in Taiwan in 1997 and his PhD degree in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2004. Dr. Jan’s research focuses on soft tissue biomechanics and wheelchair related technology development. He is recognized for his work on modeling microvascular dynamics and soft tissue mechanical properties in people at risk of pressure ulcers. Dr. Jan’s research results have contributed to the understanding of mechanical etiology of pressure ulcers. Dr. Jan has published more than 30 journal articles and 40 proceeding papers. He research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and disability-related research foundations.
