"Fungi for Bioenergy: Polyporales as pretreatment agents for biomass"

Abstract: The pretreatment of biomass for biofuel production is inefficient, expensive, and frequently requires harsh chemical reactions. The objective of my research is to explore the efficacy of using common white-rot fungi, Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium, as environmentally benign deconstruction agents for lignocellulosic biomass (e.g. Miscanthus). My laboratory has explored the physicochemical properties of woody biomass that has been directly pretreated with fungi, and has also used transcriptome technology to uncover novel enzymes produced by white-rot fungi that could be used for in vitro delignification and saccharification strategies.
