Speaker Bio: Glenda Garelli is a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where she works on a spatial inquiry into European Union membership, looking at the contested spaces of cross-Mediterranean mobility. Recently her work has focused on migrations from Arab Uprisings countries to the European Union, the Italian declaration of a 'North Africa Emergency' at the outset of the Arab Springs, the geographies of vulnerability in relation to Libyan war asylum seekers, a counter-cartography project of the Mediterranean space of circulation, and on the cinematic iconography of migrations to the European Union.

Abstract: In recent years the Southern Rim of the Mediterranean has been at the center of the European Union agenda, as the vector of its borders’ externalization and as the stage for neighborhood building initiatives coinciding with policy mobility programs traveling southward across the Middle Sea. The Arab Uprisings destabilized this Euro-Mediterranean charting of the region. In this talk I focus on the mobility of politics that Arab Uprisings migrants set in motion by crossing the Mediterranean Sea into Europe. Following Tunisian migrants in Europe at three sites, I reflect on the impact of their contested spatiality on the EU political geography and sketch a counter-map of the Mediterranean neighborhood their politics of presence instantiates.
