Abstract -- Recent innovations in real-time structural magnetic resonance imaging allow us to examine the shape of the changing vocal tract---with a number of important caveats. In this talk, I will discuss current research on several speech production phenomena (including ejectivity and pharyngealization) in a variety of languages (including Arabic and Tigrinya). I will try to assess the kinds of phonetic questions we can (and still can't) answer using structural magnetic resonance imaging of the vocal tract.
