Abstract - In 1791, no less than five distinct plays reenacted with great precision the trial and execution of Jean Calas. Two years later, Louis XVI was sentenced to death, following a trial decried by some as overly theatrical, and by others, as not theatrical enough. These two events raise important and still contemporary questions about trauma, forgetting, and the place of performance in legal proceedings.
