Designing complex systems portfolio has been a challenging task, particularly in a predictive context of life cycle – pre-life, usage life, and end-of-life. Emerging interest in green systems and sustainability has garnered new contributions in systems design optimization. However, "Being Green" generally implies "Being Un-sustainable" in the industry due to additional cost of product stewardship. Green Profit Design developed by Kim’s team shows that there is a strong link between sustainable product design, user generated contents in the social network service, and corporate profit generation. Specifically, the method utilizes multi-level, multi-disciplinary optimization with Holt-Winters type smoothing technique to capture time-dependent preference trend in the life cycle context. In this presentation, the speaker will present an overview of the new research directions based on the findings from the recent studies sponsored by the National Science Foundation – green, sustainable design and recovery; sustainable product family design and recovery; trend mining design for product portfolio; hybrid, renewable power generation system design.
