Originating Calendar Physics - Mathematical and Theoretical Physics Seminar
Wigner's basic theorem about symmetries of quantum mechanics (which may be interpreted as a theorem in Riemannian geometry) leads in many cases to discrete invariants of quantum systems. In joint work with Greg Moore we formulate in mathematical terms the notion of "topological phase" and apply it to the study of topological insulators in condensed matter physics. Topological phases are then measured by twisted equivariant K-theory.
