Physics Colloquium: "This Old Zero-Net-Energy House"
Can you retrofit a house in Illinois such that it provides its own energy over the course of a year, and do it at a reasonable cost? The answer is “yes”, thanks in part to the decline in the price of solar photovoltaic modules. I describe how to reduce a home’s energy use via various energy-efficiency upgrades, as well as geothermal heating and cooling. Using my own house as a case study, I show that each of these steps has a positive return on investment.
